Aspen Dental and International Medical Relief Provide Free Dental Services to Patients in Ecuador

March 20, 2024 – On this World Oral Health Day, Aspen Dental and International Medical Relief (IMR) proudly announce their collaborative mission to bolster oral health access for resource-constrained communities worldwide.

Highlights:

  • As part of Aspen Dental's Overseas Outreach service program, Aspen Dental and IMR have united to provide cutting-edge dental care to underserved populations in Quito, Ecuador. This collaboration underscores their joint commitment to establishing accessible pathways for communities with limited resources to enhance their oral health, both domestically and globally.
  • Over the span of just two days, a dedicated team of Aspen Dental doctors, in collaboration with IMR, delivered essential dental services to over 280 patients in Quito, Ecuador.
  • Services rendered included 261 dental consults, 81 cleanings, 67 fluoride treatment and 35+ completed scans for full or partial digital dentures, marking a significant advancement in access to innovative dental solutions for those in need.
  • Leveraging state-of-the-art 3D printing capabilities, the team facilitated the creation and shipment of dentures back to patients in Ecuador, ensuring ongoing support and care beyond the initial treatment.

Key Facts:

  • A recent report from the Journal of Public Health Dentistry highlights alarming oral health disparities within Latino communities compared to other racial or ethnic groups. Cases of decayed teeth and untreated dental issues among Latino children can lead to increased treatment expenses in the future or severe chronic health conditions.
  • According to the American Dental Association (ADA), approximately 100 million Americans fail to visit a dentist each year, despite the preventive benefits of regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene. Neglecting oral health can exacerbate risks for broader health issues such as dementia, diabetes, and heart disease.

ABOUT INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL RELIEF:
International Medical Relief (IMR) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides health care to under-served and vulnerable people around the world. IMR recruits qualified medical, dental, and surgical teams and offers short-term assignments for volunteer doctors, dentists, and other health care professionals as well as non-medical volunteers to conduct medical clinics in areas where medical care is limited or difficult to obtain. IMR was founded on the belief that knowledge of basic health facts and access to health care should not be the prerogative of select nations, regions, or classes, but should be shared by as many people as possible.  While IMR operates sustainable, long-term solutions in our communities, global health volunteers often participate for one to two weeks beyond our borders.
